BLITZ TOURNAMENT RULES

This tournament is played on an annual basis for the Bryan Hughes Trophy. The winner and runner-up receive shields. The competition counts towards the Victor Ludorum (the best overall percentage scores at senior and junior levels during the season).

  1. The competition is a five-round time-handicapped Swiss tournament with progressive scores.

  1. Touch-and-move is required. Remember to move the king first when castling.

  1. Illegal moves lose the game; this includes leaving the king in check or moving the king into check. However, please make allowances for players new to quickplay competition. All players should announce check clearly.

  1. The player whose flag falls first loses the game, provided that the winning player has sufficient mating material on the board.

  1. The hand that moves the pieces must also press the clock. “Clock covering” is therefore not allowed. Please do not use excessive force in pressing the clock button.

  1. In the event of dispute, raise your hand and stop the clock. Any unresolved disputes will be decided by the Tournament Secretary, President and one other committee member. Their decision will be final and binding.

  1. Spectators/participants must not speak or otherwise interfere in a game other than their own and must never draw attention to a flag fall or illegal move.

  1. Play shall be governed by the spirit of the Laws of Chess, i.e. in an ethical manner and in the spirit of fair play.

  1. At the end of each game, the winner should hand in the cards at the arbiters’ desk.

In the event of a tie or ties, playoffs will be arranged.
